Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has dismissed a potential switch for Marcus Maddison to Aston Villa this summer.

Maddison, 23, is reportedly a transfer target for Steve Bruce, after it was earlier revealed by MacAnthony that Aston Villa had been scouting the winger in action.

The outspoken Posh chairman had claimed on Twitter in January that Villa had sent Brian Little to watch Maddison, who has been ripping up the league this season, on several occasions.

Maddison has gone from strength to strength with Peterborough, and has contributed eight goals and 16 assists this season from 44 appearances in all competitions.

However, MacAnthony has more recently admitted that he does not expect Aston Villa to follow up their interest, because they are ‘not brave enough.’

In an interview with the Peterborough Telegraph, MacAnthony said: “Brian Little came to watch two games, and Marcus wasn’t great in them.

“I could never see Villa buying him. I don’t think they would be brave enough.

“But I believe he would walk into most Championship sides because every manager wants a player who can create and score goals.”

Aston Villa made a number of midfield additions during the January window, but failed in their pursuit of an outright winger.

Birkir Bjarnason, Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury, who are central midfielders by trade, have each been deployed in wider roles since their arrival, but Bruce may re-ignite his pursuit of a speedy wide-man in the summer.

Football Insider verdict

If there’s anything Aston Villa could do with most in their team this summer, it is a winger who can score goals – and Maddison fits the bill. He is one of Peterborough’s most-prized assets, and they will be reluctant to let him go on the cheap, but if Aston Villa put their minds to it, he’ll be their man in no time at all. However, the big issue is that they won’t have had the most glowing report of Maddison from Brian Little, which could already have all but ended their interest in the player. Furthermore, while he would be a decent addition to the Championship, it remains to be seen if he has what it takes to perform in the Premier League, which ultimately is the next aim for Aston Villa.
