Newcastle get emphatic answer over move for top striker target after bids tabled - report
Newcastle’s move for striker Nicolai Jørgensen is off after the club failed to make an improved third bid before the deadline of 6pm, according to a report.
Dutch outlet AD claim that the deadline had been set by the club to ensure it could prepare properly for its crunch cup game against PSV on Wednesday.
The deadline of 6pm Dutch time has passed without a further bid from Newcastle and the club is now adamant that he will remain a Feyenoord player.
The report claims that two bids were tabled by Newcastle but that both of them were too low.
The second Newcastle bid is understood to have been for £15million with the club holding out for at least £17.5million.
Football Insider verdict:
So this looks like another striker target that Newcastle will miss out on today after the news of Daniel Sturridge’s move to West Brom. This one must be even more gutting for fans and manager Rafa Benitez. The club were willing to sell and it doesn’t sound like the two sides were a million miles apart. But the refusal to go back with a third bid before the 6pm deadline means that Newcastle are now back to square one with just three days left to find someone. Islam Slimani is a name that’s still being mentioned, but like Joselu, he’s not a player that’s going to change things dramatically at St James’ Park. You can see why Newcastle fans don’t think much of their owner Mike Ashley.
