New Newcastle United striker Islam Slimani has confirmed there were a whole host of clubs interested in signing him from Leicester City over the January transfer window.
The Magpies managed to pull off a deadline deal for the 29-year-old international, securing his services on loan until the end of the season, but had to fend off a huge amount of other suitors in order to make the deal happen.
However Slimani himself says that he feels as though he has made the right decision to put pen to paper on a deal at St James’ Park and cannot wait to prove himself in front of the Newcastle faithful.
He told the Chronicle: “It’s a great club a very famous club, world-renowned players like Alan Shearer .
“I’m here to give my best to fight for my team. I hope I can show what I’m capable of.
“A lot of clubs got in touch but I’m pretty sure I made the right choice. Newcastle’s a big club and it’s a good choice.”
Slimani, who has scored eight Premier League goals in 35 appearances for the Foxes, missed his new club’s first game through a thigh injury, but will be hoping to take part when Manchester United visit the north east on Sunday, and has already spoken about securing a permanent deal.
Football Insider verdict
News that Newcastle actually managed to secure a signing ahead of clubs will come as a major shock to the Toon Army, who have got used to being disappointed whenever a transfer target was hunted by someone else. Still, it shows that the Magpies still have some pulling power through various factors, be it the incredible fan base, impressive stadium or the Champions League winning manager in the shape of Rafael Benitez. Slimani needs to hit the ground running on Tyneside to help the club in their hunt for survival, and if he does, he could well go down a hero at St James’ Park.
