Swansea have confirmed that Gylfi Sigurdsson has not travelled with the squad ahead of their pre-season tour.

The announcement comes as a major development after the Telegraph reported that Everton had tabled a £40million bid for the 27-year-old and are confident of completing a deal within the next few days.

Swansea posted on their official Twitter account on Thursday morning that Sigurdsson “will not travel with the squad for our pre-season tour of the USA” before adding that the Iceland international “did not feel in the right frame of mind to travel” following “current uncertainty over his future”.

It is understood that Ronald Koeman is about to smash Everton’s transfer record the second time this transfer window, after Jordan Pickford’s potential £30million switch from Sunderland was confirmed as his first summer signing.

Sigurdsson is said to have been the Dutch manager’s top target, and it looks as though he is now on the verge of adding the ex-Tottenham midfielder to his huge summer overhaul.

The 50-times Iceland international has been in top form for Everton’s Premier League rivals Swansea over the last couple of years, scoring ten goals and supplying 13 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions last term as the Welsh club avoided relegation.

Swansea’s announcement looks to make it very clear that Sigurdsson is taking serious consideration of this move to Everton. He may be staying in the UK to make it easier for him to complete a move to Merseyside, but the fact that he hasn’t travelled is a clear indicator that his time at the Liberty Stadium looks to be well and truly over. Sigurdsson could really transform the Everton squad into a top four contender. He has been supplying assists for fun in a team that has little attacking threat, so imagine what he could achieve in a team with Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and potentially another top striker.
