Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy is a doubt for the club’s clash against Newcastle United on Saturday after picking up an injury blow while on international duty with Australia.
The Football Federation Australia (FFA) confirmed via their official website that the 27-year-old had been ruled out of the friendly with Colombia and had returned to the Terriers in order to recover after suffering what was deemed to be a “minor setback”.
Mooy has been a star in the centre for Huddersfield’s first season in the Premier League, making 29 top flight appearances, and was the match winner when Newcastle travelled to the John Smiths Stadium earlier in the campaign, securing a 1-0 win.
He may not be the only senior star missing for Saturday’s crunch clash, with the Magpies’ winger Matt Ritchie also a doubt after picking up an injury while with Scotland.
Football Insider verdict
Mooy’s absence will only boost Newcastle’s hopes of picking up victory over one of their rivals for survival this season, as he has proven he has the abilities to be a game changer at the Magpies’ expense. Huddersfield meanwhile will be sweating over his fitness and hoping that he can make an immediate recovery for their trip up to St James’ Park. Either team picking up victory will give them a boost of escaping the relegation battle while at the same time pushing the other deeper into the mire, and so the game could either be a nervy showdown with neither side willing to risk losing the points, or a free flowing clash as both sides push for a winner.
In other Newcastle United news, the club are on the verge of a triple boost and could have it practically sealed in three weeks.
