Arsenal are believed to be keen on signing Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt and have already made contact with the player’s representatives, according to a report.
Spanish media publication Mundo Deportivo state that Barry Hulshoff, who is an advisor of the defender, has admitted the interest.
The Gunners face a battle for the youngster’s signature along with Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Barcelona were thought to be keen on making a move for the player in the January transfer window following news that Javier Mascherano would be on his way out of the club.
18-year-old de Ligt is under contract at the Dutch giants until 2021 which means the Gunners will have to loosen the purse strings to get their target.
However, the report claims that the youngster will decide on his next move at the end of the season.
Football Insider verdict:
Arsenal certainly need to bring in a defender or two this summer, particularly if the club are going to have any hope of getting back into the Champions League places and de Ligt is certainly a talent. He doesn’t have a wealth of experience though and that is something the Gunners are in desperate need of. Arsene Wenger’s side need to be buying players that are ready-made for the job and can step in when the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi are injured.
