Crystal Palace set for punishment after breaching financial rules - Stefan Borson
Crystal Palace are likely to intentionally breach UEFA’s SCR cap of 70 per cent this season.
That is according to former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has revealed that the Eagles are likely to face a fine from the European governing body.
This comes after a quiet summer transfer window that saw the South London outfit spend just £54million on new additions to Pierre Sage’s squad.
Their place in the Europa League has left them with tighter SCR constraints than the Premier League’s 85 per cent cap, but Borson believes that UEFA’s punishments are so light that there is little point in Palace adhering to their rules.
UEFA have fined several Premier League clubs for breaches of their SCR cap in recent years, including the likes of Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
However, Borson is adamant that the fines are largely insignificant for elite clubs, and as a result, he does not expect Palace to be concerned about overspending at all.
Crystal Palace unfazed by UEFA fine
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson made it clear that the prospect of a fine from UEFA will be of little concern to the Eagles.
“I don't think they've got much of a problem with SCR. We have quite a lot of information about Palace, and usually we do get their full team wage bill in their accounts,” he said.
“So we see what proportion of it is in there. I mean 70 per cent for the UEFA test on SCR, it’s not that big of a deal. You just pay a relatively small fine and carry on with no particular issue.
“You've also got the football earnings test if you're a UEFA team, which you don't have in the Premier League anymore. And that football earnings test is effectively an SCR, but with much lower limits.
“Palace had a big profit with (Maxence) Lacroix. Munoz is a good profit as well. I don't think that lack of spending is particularly driven by regulation.”
Adam Wharton has put Crystal Palace teammates to shame
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier this week that Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has put some of his teammates “to shame” with the loyalty that he has shown to the club.
The England international stayed put at Selhurst Park once again, despite yet more consistent links with some of the Premier League’s leading clubs.
Brown made it clear that Palace intend to repay Wharton’s loyalty over time, and will ultimately help him to facilitate a good move in the coming years to reward his patience.
Wharton’s stance has been a far cry from that shown by some of his teammates, and Brown believes that he deserves praise for his commitment to the cause.
