Rob Edwards is in contention to become the next Crystal Palace manager if Pierre Sage is sacked, sources have told Football Insider.

The Eagles' sporting director, Matt Hobbs, is a big admirer of Edwards and knows him well from their time working together at Wolves.

Birmingham City are also keeping tabs on Edwards with Chris Davies' own position under threat.

French boss Sage is under increasing pressure at Palace amid concerns over issues that have arisen behind the scenes since his June appointment.

Several senior players are believed to be unhappy with his training methods as they struggle for form at the start of the new campaign.

Edwards is in contention to potentially replace him at Selhurst Park, having been out of work since he was sacked by Wolves after their relegation from the Premier League.

Palace have won just one of their first four Premier League games under Sage following his appointment as their new boss in June.

The 47-year-old was coaxed to South London to succeed Oliver Glasner after leading Lens to a second-placed Ligue 1 finish and Coupe de France glory last season.

He has already publicly criticised the work-rate of some of his Palace stars, with the board believed to be particularly irked after he dropped Jaydee Canvot from the squad to face Ipswich last weekend.

Edwards could take his third job in the Premier League at Selhurst Park soon following previous spells with Luton Town and Wolves.

He led Luton to promotion in 2023 but was unable to keep them up before leaving in January 2025, going on to be hired by Middlesbrough five months later.

Boro's impressive early-season form saw Wolves poach him to replace Vitor Pereira in an attempt to avoid relegation, but he took them down and was sacked in June.

Birmingham interested in appointing Edwards to replace Davies

Edwards has shown that he can build squads worthy of pushing for promotion from the Championship, which is the Blues' aim this season.

Current manager Davies has come under fire with their fans for his negative tactics, and a change could be made if they struggle to compete for the playoffs.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Birmingham admire Edwards and would approach him to be their next manager.

Palace, therefore, may have to move quickly if they wish to make him their new boss ahead of the Second City outfit.
