Danny Mills exclusive: Tottenham star may be to blame for fall from grace under Jose
Danny Mills says Tottenham defender Danny Rose may have contributed to his own fall down the pecking order with his behaviour in north London.
The former Leeds United and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says the 29-year-old’s outspoken approach to his career has not helped his situation with the Lilywhites.
Rose moved to Newcastle United on loan until the end of the season in January, having struggled to nail down a regular place in the squad under Jose Mourinho.
Rose has previously spoken about how he plans to run down the last 18 months of his contract with Tottenham and leave as a free agent in 2021, revealing he had been told there was no new deal forthcoming.
Mills says he thinks the left-back’s behaviour has not helped his cause and says he may be to blame for his fall from grace at Spurs.
Asked about his move to Tyneside, Mills told Football Insider: “I think a lot of that was instigated by Danny Rose, he knows that he’s still in and around the England squad – that left-back position is between him and Chilwell and he needs to play.”

“It was quite apparent that for whatever reason, maybe through some of his own doing – saying that he didn’t really want to be at Tottenham, he wasn’t going to sign a contract extension – he’d been left out of the side.
“I think he knows himself he needs to play football.”
Rose only played 17 times during the first half of the season, the majority of those appearances coming under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
He turned out just twice for Mourinho in the Premier League before his move to Newcastle, making his debut against Norwich City on Saturday.
