Darren Bent has revealed Tottenham’s stars have told him Moussa Dembele is “the best player they ever played with”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker revealed the reverence with which the midfielder is spoken about at the club’s training ground.
Dembele, 31, ended his seven-year spell at Tottenham when he signed for Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R&F in the January window.
Bent is a huge admirer of the Belgium international as he lamented how his ex-club took six months to bring in a top-quality replacement for him, when they signed Tanguy Ndombele for a club-record fee last week.
“They never replaced him in the first place,” Bent told Football Insider. “He was one that maybe after 70, 80 minutes used to run out of steam but on the ball could control possession, keep hold of it, go past players, could create, never seem to get the ball away and if you speak to the Spurs players, and the Fulham players, who played with him, like I’ve done, and some say he’s the best player they’ve ever played with.
“He was brilliant and when they let him go I did wait to see who they were going to sign and when no one came in I kind of thought, ‘they’re going to rue this’.
“Yes, they did really well last season to get past Ajax but I couldn’t help but think in the semi-final first leg if Mousa Dembele was there it might not have turned out the same way.”
It is intriguing that so many Spurs players rate Dembele so highly, and ahead of their longstanding teammates like England captain and club talisman Harry Kane and playmaker Christian Eriksen, as well as the likes of Dele Alli and World Cup winner Hugo Lloris.
