Davinson Sanchez set for Tottenham axe amid 'surprise' development - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Cristian Romero will reprise his role in the Tottenham starting line-up after Davinson Sanchez’s “rash” tackle during the 6-2 win over Leicester on Saturday (17 September).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it was a “surprise” to see the 26-year-old start over Romero against the Foxes.

Sanchez helped Leicester to an early lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when his challenge upended James Justin inside the 18-yard box.

The former Ajax defender, who was returning to the side after missing games against Sporting CP and Fulham, was substituted just before the hour mark.

The Colombia international made just 17 starts last season with Romero’s arrival consigning him to a rotation role.

Whelan claimed Sanchez has made the decision to bring Romero back into the side “very easy” for Antonio Conte.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “That’s a challenge which has been present since he came to Tottenham.

“It’s an area of his game where he can be a bit lacklustre. He charged in like a bull.

“He can be so fantastic during a game but he’s always got that challenge in him. The player was going nowhere, and it was just a rash decision.

“It could’ve hurt Tottenham, but they bounced back quite quickly.

“I was surprised to see Romero on the bench. I think it’s an area of the field where you can’t have a player like him sat on the sidelines.

“He’s been the standout defender since he came into the football club.

“I think Sanchez has made Conte’s decision very easy for the next game.”
