Darren Bent has admitted he cannot believe that Lucas Moura is still being used as backup to the Tottenham starting XI for big games after his goal-scoring display against Manchester City.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the Brazilian’s heroics in the Champions League last season, the winger scoring a hat trick against Ajax in the semi-finals, should have earned him a regular place in the side under Mauricio Pochettino.
Having started the opening game of the season against Aston Villa, the 27-year-old was dropped to the substitutes’ bench against City, Christian Eriksen taking his place in the attack.
Bent revealed he is baffled by Pochettino’s decision to bench the former PSG star, heralding the attacker’s attitude and bravery to score the equaliser for Tottenham immediately after coming off the bench.
Bent told Football Insider: “You have to say to yourself how does a man who scores a hat trick in a Champions League semi-final still not start games? It defies belief, I don’t understand it.
“Again he was the hero. Comes on, doesn’t sulk about it, I’m sure he was disappointed about it but he doesn’t sulk, comes on and scores an absolutely fantastic header.
“One thing I’ll say about him is he’s small but he’s very, very brave to put his head in there. I’m delighted that he’s got that goal.”
Moura has been in and out of the starting XI during his time at Spurs, fighting it out with the likes of Erik Lamela, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen for a place in Pochettino’s line up.
The Brazilian star featured 49 times across all competitions last season, 25 of those coming as starts in the Premier League.
In other Tottenham news, Football Insider can reveal that one of their senior stars has informed his agent to find him a new club.
