Paul Merson has predicted a tight cagey clash at the top of the Premier League in the Saturday lunchtime clash between Man United and Liverpool.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson thinks that the two sides will share the spoils as they race for second place in the Premier League.
Man City are out of sight at the top, but the top-four is still wide open below them and Merson thinks the picture will be no clearer after Saturday’s game.
He’s predicting a 1-1 draw in the 12.30pm kick-off at Old Trafford.
However, if he’s wrong and there is a winner, Merson thinks that whoever ends up on top at Old Trafford will go on to finish second to Man City.
His verdcit on Liverpool is way more definitive though, saying if they win they will “definitely end up coming runners-up”.
“I can’t see Liverpool losing. It’s a game where the first goal is massive, but Liverpool score and have plenty of pace in the team,” wrote Merson.
“They’re playing well and have confidence. I don’t think Manchester United will be able to cope with them at the back.
“United won’t open it up, I don’t see that happening at all. If they win, they’ll probably get second, but if Liverpool do I think they’ll definitely end up coming runners-up.”
Football Insider verdict:
Everything to play for then at Old Trafford on Saturday but Merson is on the fence. However, we think Liverpool will prevail. Jurgen Klopp got to rest Mohamed Salah against Porto in midweek and although he played a fairly strong side, it was an easy game that was already won and his key players didn’t exert themselves. Mourinho will set his team up not to lose but if Liverpool get on the front foot their attackers will cause the United back line all sorts of problems. We’ll go for a 2-1 to Liverpool.
