Dele Alli set for Everton exit after 'surprising' development - pundit

Kevin Phillips has claimed Dele Alli’s “disappointing” start at Everton has been a “real surprise”.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old is already set for the exit door at Goodison Park.

Alli has been snubbed for the last two Premier League games despite the unavailability of Allan and Donny van de Beek – with Frank Lampard instead electing to start Mason Holgate in midfield.

The 37-cap England international is yet to start since signing from Tottenham for a reported potential fee of £40million in January.

Alli is contracted until June 2024.

According to The Telegraph (4 April), the midfielder’s future will be in “serious doubt” if Everton were to be relegated.

Phillips claimed Alli must find a club where he can “thrive” after a “difficult period” in his career.

“There have been suggestions that his time at Everton is going to come to an end,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“That’s a real surprise, for me. I thought a fresh challenge would get him back to the level we saw from him before.

“It’s a really difficult period for Dele Alli and his career. He’s got to find somewhere where he can thrive, and it’s not looking like that’s going to be Everton.

“It’s disappointing for player and club, but the reality is that he has been so far from his best.”

Alli has played just 169 minutes of football since finalising his Everton move on transfer deadline day.

The Toffees are just one point clear of the relegation zone.
