Everton facing 'huge' dressing room 'crisis' after new confession - pundit

Alex McLeish has insisted Frank Lampard is facing a confidence “crisis” at Everton after Wednesday’s defeat to Burnley.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested there has been a “huge drop” in self-belief in the dressing room.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Wednesday’s game (6 April), Lampard confessed his players “are in a battle” and that they need to “fight” through any confidence issues.

The Toffees now sit just one point above the relegation zone, albeit with games in hand over Watford, Norwich and Leeds.

McLeish insisted Everton need a win soon to avoid going into a “spiral” at the bottom of the table.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Everton are going through an absolutely torrid time. They have to get a win under their belt very, very soon. Otherwise, they’ll spiral.

“I know they’re one or two points clear with one or two games in hand but I think the confidence in there is a little bit low.

“When you’re on a brilliant run, they used to say: ‘Bottle it up and make sure that doesn’t happen again.’

“All of a sudden, there’s a bad result, you lose a couple of players or injuries, you can’t get the team that you want on the pitch. Then all of a sudden, there’s a mood shift and a huge drop in confidence.

“In this Premier League, there’s massive confidence you get from a victory. We’ve seen that evidenced with the Newcastle situation. The confidence of winning one, then two, you feel as if you can beat anybody.

“At the moment, Everton are having a confidence crisis.”

The Toffees have won just one of their last seven league games.

They next face Manchester United on Saturday.
