Dele Alli told to leave Tottenham after Conte makes feelings clear - Robinson

Dele Alli should leave Tottenham despite the arrival of Antonio Conte, according to Paul Robinson.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is hopeful Spurs’ new manager can bring the best out of the 25-year-old but is fearful “a fresh challenge” is needed.

Alli was an unused substitute in Antonio Conte’s first game in charge as Tottenham defeated Vitesse 3-2 in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

The attacking midfielder has struggled for form and regular game time since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in November 2019.

He not started a Premier League game in over a month.

When asked by Football Insider if Conte’s arrival could re-ignite Alli’s form, Robinson said: “I’m still of the opinion Dele needs a fresh start.

“We forget that he is still so young in footballing terms. He has achieved so much though.

“He has been the master of his own downfall in many ways because he has not matched the standards he set himself.

“Managers have not been able to get it out of him though. Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo failed to do it.

“The quality of player is still there. Conte could bring the best out of Dele Alli and I hope he does.

“But, in my honest opinion, he needs a move away and a fresh challenge.”

Alli has made 13 appearances across all competitions this season.

His current contract at Spurs expires in the summer of 2024.
