Doherty 'really struggling' at Tottenham as he hits out at Nuno - pundit
Noel Whelan insists Matt Doherty “wasn’t at it” against Rennes as he was dropped to the bench for the Tottenham v Chelsea.
The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after the defender made a rare appearance under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Doherty was in from the start as Tottenham drew 2-2 with Rennes on Thursday night.
This was just his third start this season with Japhet Tanganga and Emerson Royal seemingly preferred by Nuno.
Speaking to the Independent (18 September) Doherty, who was a regular under Nuno at Wolves, claimed his former manager “has changed” since they last worked together.
He also claimed the boss “he has had to adapt” to his new role.

Whelan claims Doherty will continue to struggle unless he is given more regular game time.
“You look for a really good performance when you get that chance,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“You need to really push the players in front of you if you want to be given a chance in the Premier League.
“It wasn’t a great performance against Rennes and that’s being kind. He wasn’t at it. Nuno was looking for him to step up and to get forward as well as perform at the back.
“It certainly wasn’t his finest performance. It’s still early in the season and he is really struggling for game time.
“Maybe that’s what it’s down to. Sometimes it takes five or six games to get those fitness levels back in a new season. He just isn’t getting that.“
Doherty made 29 appearances during his debut Tottenham season.
However, only 13 of those outings were in the Premier League with the defender playing more regularly in Europe.
