Sources: Door ajar for Leeds to seal another £20m+ striker deal amid huge development

The door has opened for Leeds United to sign another £20million-plus striker as Brentford finalise replacing Ollie Watkins with Ivan Toney.

Football Insider understands that the west London club have agreed a deal worth £9m including add-ons with Peterborough United for the prolific Toney.

That paves the way for Watkins, 24, to leave Brentford and he has multiple Premier League suitors including his former manager Dean Smith at Aston Villa.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider they also retain an interest in Watkins despite agreeing to sign striker Rodrigo from Valencia this week in a deal worth an initial £27m.

Villa are in pole position to land Watkins and have held talks with Brentford over a deal but have been put off by his £25m asking price.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wants two new senior strikers this window to add to 2019-20 mainstay Patrick Bamford as well as incoming youngster Sam Greenwood, who is joining from Arsenal for £1.5m.

Watkins is a wanted man following the Brentford’s play-off final failure against Fulham last month and is set to leave to move up to the top flight.

Football Insider has been that Fulham, Sheffield United, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Brighton have also registered their interest in Watkins.

Smith took the forward to Griffin Park in 2017 from Exeter City and helped mould him into the most feared striker in the Championship.

Watkins scored 25 goals in 46 Championship games for Brentford last season as well as a further goal in the play-offs,

It ended with him being name the Championship player of the year.

In total, he has banged in 49 goals from 143 Bees matches as well as provided 17 assists.
