Door opens for Newcastle to sign superstar after Sky reveal

The door is open for Newcastle United to make a move for Edinson Cavani after PSG reportedly settled the full-time signing of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan.

The Uruguayan superstar is available on a free transfer this summer as his lucrative contract at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of next month.

That has been all but confirmed by the player himself while PSG have indicated they are not looking to offer him an extension by tying up the permanent capture of Icardi.

Sky Sports Italy claim the French champions have agreed to pay Inter a fee of £45m with £6.2m in add-ons for the Argentine centre-forward.

There was a race against time for the transfer to be completed with PSG’s option to buy expiring on Sunday May 31, following his successful season-long loan.

Despite facing healthy competition from Cavani, Icardi was deemed the first-choice option as the attack spearhead in the recently-terminated season.

Often partnered alongside Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in a front three, the 27-year-old netted 20 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions before the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cavani’s camp have actively talked up a link with Newcastle should their £300million takeover be completed as expected.

There will be multiple hurdles to be cleared, not least the goal machine’s salary expectations and rival interest from elite clubs.

There is no doubting the pedigree of the 33-year-old, who has scored a remarkable 200 goals in 301 PSG matches after similarly prolific spells at Napoli and Palermo.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that Premier League big guns are plotting signing a Magpies first team star who has house next to their training ground.
