'Early Christmas present' - Exclusive: Noel Whelan raving as Leeds agree new contract deal
Noel Whelan says Leeds United winger Jordan Stevens has been handed an “early Christmas present” as he raves over the youngster’s new contract.
The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the club have shown great initiative to get both first and reserve team players tied up to new deals.
Leeds confirmed earlier this week that the 19-year-old had put pen to paper on a contract which keeps him committed to the club until 2022.
Whelan says that it is a great reward for the young attacker and that it should help him get over his six-week ban for betting offences earlier in the season.
“They’ve been ticking away nicely, getting contracts signed and people nailed down to the club for long contracts,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“It’s great to see Jordan Stevens has been given one. He scored a goal in midweek for the under-23s, he’s had a bit of a turbulent start this season and this will just cheer him up now, put him in a good place before Christmas.

“Hopefully his football can do all the talking instead of all the antics with the betting and being away from the club for such a length of time.
“This is a nice early Christmas present for the young man and hopefully, like everyone else, he’ll show faith in that new contract and performances will kick on from now.
Leeds have signed the likes of first-team stars Kalvin Phillips, Pablo Hernandez and Luke Ayling, as well as upcoming talents Leif Davis and Jack Jenkins, to new deals recently.
Stevens has made one senior appearance for the Whites since joining from Forest Green Rovers.
In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills claims that the club have already got their own “James Milner” at Elland Road.
