Eddie Howe backed after 'mad' Newcastle United player update - pundit
Miguel Almiron has not earned a new Newcastle United contract despite his impressive start to the season.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Paraguayan’s future.
A report from The Telegraph (27 October) had suggested Almiron, 28, was set to be rewarded for his sparkling form with a new long-term contract.
However, as quoted by Newcastle World (28 October), Howe was quick to shut those claims down – claiming he didn’t “know where that story has come from” and insisting discussions will take place “at a later date”.
Almiron, who is currently out of contract at the end of the 2023-24 season, has netted seven goals in 13 Premier League outings this term.
Despite this form, McManus insists it is too soon to talk about a new deal.

“He’s had one really, really good month,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“That doesn’t earn you a new deal. I’m with Eddie Howe on this one. If he carries this on until the end of the season then absolutely.
“What if he goes back to how he was playing last season but now he is on a much bigger pay packet and tied down for longer?
“Listen, I hope that doesn’t happen. I hope he gets better. But you have to think about the practicality of it.
“You have to earn a deal and Almiron is well on the way to doing that but you can’t just be giving them out based on a good run of form.
“It would be mad, you would have new contracts every other week.”
Almiron joined Newcastle in January 2019 in a transfer BBC Sport claim was worth £20million.
He has scored 21 goals in 136 total appearances for the club.
