Eddie Howe will be at Newcastle United for 'a long time' thanks to 'massive' development - pundit

Eddie Howe could be at Newcastle United for “a long time” despite not being the big-name manager some expected to replace Steve Bruce.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Howe’s impact at St James’ Park.

Newcastle moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Wolves on Friday (8 April).

The Magpies were in the relegation zone and winless when Howe took over in November.

His side now have eight wins on the board and look set for another season in the Premier League.

McAvennie insists Howe has a long-term future at the club after winning over the fans.

“There is no reason why Eddie Howe won’t be there for a long time,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If Newcastle keep improving, keep getting better players and keep moving up the table, he won’t be sacked.

“It looks like the players love him there. I think there were some doubters when he came in.

“He isn’t the big name a lot of people wanted or expected but he’s done a really good job.

“I don’t think many people could see Newcastle in this position at this point in the season.

“The fans have taken to him as well which is massive, that didn’t happen with Steve Bruce.”

Howe has managed 20 games as Newcastle boss and has picked up 28 points in the Premier League.

Newcastle are next in action against Leicester City on 17 April.
