Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have been quick to turn their frustrations on Toti Gomes after their shock 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

The Old Gold side were unable to pick up an expected three points on the opening game of the Championship season as they struggled against one of the relegation favourites.

In fact, a late controversial penalty saved the hosts from a defeat as Raul Jimenez dispatched from 12 yards in added time.

Many of Cesar Peixoto’s players were incredibly poor, with Wolves creating little and looking defensively fragile.

One of the worst performers on the pitch was captain Gomes, who was poor in both goals that the Old Gold side conceded.

As a result, Wolves fans were quick to make their feelings known, with the centre-back receiving plenty of criticism for his performance.

Coming into the new campaign, Gomes was far from the most popular figure at Molineux.

Despite being a regular in Wolves’ first-team for the previous four campaigns, he is now remembered for being the captain who led the club to a humiliating relegation last season.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, the defender was extremely poor and was part of a backline that conceded 68 goals in the Premier League, the second-most in the division.

Nevertheless, it was expected that a drop into the Championship would see Gomes become one of the best defenders in the division.

However, against Blackburn, he was extremely poor and was arguably at fault for the visitors’ equaliser.

Therefore, many Wolves fans were quick to take to X to blast the performance, with some even calling for him to be dropped from the team.

Toti, Bentley and midfield very poor, constant gaps in the middle of the park.

Created little to nothing in the 2nd half, partly down to the port substitutions. Of which barring Raul, aren’t level raisers or equal to the players being replaced.

So many issues with that game yesterday. Shockingly bad.

• Toti x Mosquera about as comfortable as a bike with no seat.
• Essentially a 1-man midfield with Munetsi being so high and out of position.
• Wingers were crap, offered nothing. Theirs looked better.

How bad was Gomes vs Blackburn?

Unfortunately for Gomes, his stats against Blackburn do not look good.

According to Fotmob on 15 August, he won zero out of two aerial duels, made zero tackles, zero interceptions, zero blocks, four clearances, one recovery, and completed 96 per cent of his passes.

With tougher tests on the horizon, Gomes simply has to be better at the back if Wolves are to fight for promotion this season.

If not, the captain could quickly find himself booted out of the starting XI.
