Stefan Borson reveals Hull City's likely PSR punishment after 'six-point deduction' claim
Hull City should not be concerned by the threat of a six-point deduction following their team's promotion to the Premier League.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that not all reported figures are accurate ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Upon winning promotion back to the Premier League, finishing third in the Championship before beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final, the Tigers have been greeted with a PSR breach.
It is understood that Hull must sell players before the end of June, having overspent in the region of £6million on their PSR calculation.
Inititally, it was believed that promotion bonuses in players' contracts had caused the breach, but that idea has since been squashed. The Tigers are still in a difficult position, though.
The likes of Ivor Pandur, Charlie Hughes and Kyle Joseph are attracting attention at the MKM Stadium, but the Tigers are unlikely want any major names to be sold this summer.
Hull City's potential six-point deduction squashed
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained that, while the newly promoted side do need to sell, the potential punishment has been blown way out of proportion.
"They're likely to breach by £6m. That's what the CEO told a supporters' club forum. £6m, first of all, is not a lot in these terms," he said.
"It doesn't translate to six points, so I don't know where that's come from because this would be a Premier League breach, not an EFL breach.
"It would be judged within the Premier League rules next season. So they'll send their accounts to the Premier League in December.
"The Premier League will look at them and may charge them under a breach of PSR, not under a breach of the PNS EFL rules. So that's wrong.
"And a £6m breach, it's one or two points, I think, Premier League-wise, if they do it. And they've got a few options. They can move their accounting reference date to 31 July to give them an extra month to try and make that profit.
"I don't know who they've got to sell to do it, but it's not that much money to try and swing back. They could also find themselves a sort of shed or warehouse or some other part of the ground to sell to themselves. We know that still works under PSR."
Who could the Tigers sell to balance the books?
Understandably, the supporters will not want to lose any of the current squad members, having helped the Tigers back to the Premier League.
However, starting off the campaign with a points deduction, however minor it might be, would be a huge blow, and could potentially set the wrong tone at the MKM Stadium.
One player linked with a move away is goalkeeper Pandur, with newly relegated West Ham United keeping tabs on the 26-year-old.
While he is away on international duty at the 2026 World Cup with Croatia, he is stuck on the bench, so his price tag is unlikely to rise over the summer.
