Emiliano Buendia tipped for exit as 'ruthless' Gerrard starts Aston Villa exodus - Whelan

Emi Buendia could exit Aston Villa this summer as “ruthless” manager Steven Gerrard plans a summer exodus, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old “isn’t the right fit” at Villa Park.

According to the Daily Mirror (9 April), Gerrard is willing to part with at least eight players this summer as he plans a “huge shake-up”.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (1 April) that Aston Villa are likely to spend £150million in the main window, with owners Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens prepared to fund a “huge” overhaul.

Buendia has started just one of the last seven Premier League games.

Whelan insisted Gerrard “won’t be scared” to sell the midfielder despite his reported £33million arrival last summer (2021).

“Gerrard is gradually building with his own players,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He inherited a squad which is filled with good footballers, some of which were signed by Dean Smith in the summer.

“But every manager will have a different opinion on players, and these sorts of clear-outs are what happens when you have a managerial change.

“I don’t think Gerrard will be scared to sell on any of these players if he feels they don’t fit into his plans.

“He’s trying to build a competitive team, and if there are players who aren’t up to scratch – he’ll be ruthless and get rid.

“One of those players could be Buendia. He certainly looks like he isn’t the right fit at present.”

The Argentina international has notched just two goals and four assists in 30 games this term.

Aston Villa sit 12th – some 14 points adrift of a European berth.
