Report: Euro giants eye summer move for Celtic sensation

By Matt Farr

European giants Juventus have joined the race to sign Celtic striker Moussa Dembele this summer, according to a report.

France Football, a weekly French football news magazine, claimed on their official website on Tuesday that Juventus were closely monitoring the progress of the Celtic sensation.

The 20-year-old has been in stunning form since his arrival in Scotland at the start of the season, scoring an incredible 32 goals from 49 appearances in all competitions.

He only arrived at Parkhead a year ago, and is under contract until the summer of 2020, but his prolific goalscoring form has caught the eye of a number of heavyweight European sides.

The report claims that Juventus are prepared to do battle with Premier League quartet Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham, as well as Borussia Dortmund, for his signature this summer.

The Italian champions, who face-off against AS Monaco in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night, are understood to have been monitoring Dembele since January last year.

It had been reported by the Daily Mail in January 2016 that Juventus were looking to sign the France U20 international, who was then on the books at Fulham, at the end of his contract the following summer.

However, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made it abundantly clear ahead of the recent winter transfer window that he had no plans to part with one of the club’s most prized assets, and that is not likely to change this summer.

He told TalkSport in November that he expected Dembele to continue to learn and develop with Celtic before making the move to a bigger club, although he conceded that such a move could happen in time.

Football Insider verdict

Rodgers snapped up a real talent in Dembele last summer, and he would be daft to let him leave after just 12 months. The lure of bigger and better things could become a defining factor in the coming months, but Celtic have to keep hold of their star striker. He has already thrived in domestic competitions, helping Celtic move to within 90 minutes of a domestic treble, but Dembele can now try his hand at Champions League football next season. He had a taste earlier this season, netting an impressive brace in a 3-3 draw with Manchester City in September. Juventus will be an interesting option, as will the Premier League, but Celtic must ensure he does not get his head turned if they are to get the best out of him next season.

In other Celtic transfer news, a Premier League side is plotting a swoop for this Celtic 25-year-old.
