European giants Fenerbahce are eyeing a summer deal for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to a report.
Turkish news outlet spor.mynet.com claim that Fenerbahce manager Aykut Kocaman is set to open talks with Newcastle over a potential loan deal for the out-of-form goalscorer.
Mitrovic has failed to live up to expectation since his arrival on Tyneside in 2015, when Newcastle splashed out a reported £13million to sign him from Anderlecht.
The 22-year-old managed just four goals from 25 appearances last term as Newcastle lifted the Championship title, booking their place in the Premier League for the 2017-18 campaign.
However, Fenerbahce are understood to be open to the possibility of ending Mitrovic’s barren spell at St. James’ Park this summer, by negotiating a loan deal with his current employers.
Kocaman is unhappy at the current situation regarding Robin van Persie’s uncertain future at the club, and could look to bring in the Serbia international striker as a replacement.
Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, is looking to add at least another goalscorer to his ranks ahead of their Premier League return next season, but he could consider letting one leave to accommodate a new arrival.
Football Insider verdict
A loan move to Fenerbahce could be exactly what Mitrovic needs to kickstart his career. He was attracting interest from a number of top European sides ahead of his move to Newcastle, but simply hasn’t lived up to expectation. His current form is not likely to leave Benitez satisfied at the goalscoring prowess of his attacking options ahead of next season, and allowing Mitrovic a chance to redeem himself at Fenerbahce should be a favourable option. Given he is still just 22, Benitez may be reluctant to offload him on a permanent basis, but should he impress in Turkey, the Spaniard might then see fit to bring him back into the fold.
In other Newcastle transfer news, Rafa Benitez should seek a reunion with these three stars this summer following his reported interest in Pepe Reina.
