Everton are getting a top quality player in Andre Gomes after agreeing terms with someone who’s attracted interest from elite Premier League clubs, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker is convinced the Merseysiders are landing a gem after finalising a deal with Barcelona.
As reported by Football Insider, the Merseysiders are close to agreeing the capture of Gomes in a deal worth £53million in combined transfer fee and wages.
The Merseyside club are set to pay £22million to Barcelona for the 25-year-old and have agreed a five-year contract with him worth £120,000-a-week.
“Everton are getting a great player there,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He is one of those players who is a class act and who will be even more effective in his second season than in his first.
“Lots of teams looked at him – Tottenham, West Ham, even Liverpool wanted him at one point. That tells you a lot. Midfielders who are physical, can mix it, cover the pitch and have the technical ability to operate in tight space and put the ball on a sixpence are worth their weight in gold.
“Personally, I think he has made the right choice to join Everton, as he knows Marco Silva’s playing style, is happy at the club and he should be a different prospect next season.
“Sometimes, it can take a whole season to get used to the pace and style of the league, as well as the manager’s playing style and how he wants to use you. All these factors have to be taken into consideration.”
Gomes spent last season on loan at Everton after failing to establish himself as a regular at Barcelona following his 2016 transfer from Valencia.
The Portugal international made a big impression alongside Idrissa Gueye in central midfield and Marco Silva has made it clear he wants to convert the loan into a permanent transfer.
In other Everton news, it can be REVEALED that a club have tabled a near-£2million bid for a Goodison senior player.
