Brands completely 'irresponsible' amid £12m Rodriguez reveal - McLeish
It was totally “irresponsible” for Everton director of football Marcel Brands to sanction James Rodriguez’s extortionate wages.
So says ex-Premier League manager Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 30-year-old Colombian playmaker.
This site revealed on 24 September that the Toffees failed to offload Rodriguez this summer because of his eye-watering £250,000-a-week wages.
That means the 80-cap international has set Everton back £12.25m since his arrival last summer and will cost £24m in total if sees out his contract.
Manager Rafael Benitez lamented the club’s inability to spend big over the summer window because of financial fair play constraints.
And McLeish is baffled as to why Brands would take such a big risk on a player like Rodriguez, who has failed to perform consistently.

“In a word, yes, it is irresponsible,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“I would be surprised if he gets another year into the contract. The guy’s ability is unquestionable but it’s doing it consistently that’s the problem.
“That’s what Everton need to take them to the highest level, from the top eight into the Champions League places.
“Benitez has his own ideas and style of play for the team. He wants them to be really robust and work really hard.
“Rodriguez is not a Benitez type of player. I don’t see him fitting Benitez’s plan for the future.“
Rodriguez is yet to feature for Everton this season.
His 26 appearances last term yielded six goals and nine assists.
