Everton are set to beat Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign wonderkid Joshua Zirkzee, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the Mersysiders are confident of snapping up the 16-year-old goal machine, who scored a stunning 33 goals in 27 appearances for Feyenoord’s youth team last season.
Ronald Koeman and head of recruitment Steve Walsh have shown a ruthless attitude towards the transfer market this summer and there’s no doubt that beating two Premier League title contenders in Man United and Arsenal to the signing of a highly-rated youngster highlights how far Everton have come under the Dutch manager’s reign.
The Daily Mail also reports that the Toffees are closing in on the signing of Newcastle youngster Lewis Gibson and adds that the signing of him and Zirkzee would come as “a huge victory” to Walsh.
Everton have made strong additions to their first-team this summer but have also made plans for the future with the signings of Boris Mathis, Josh Bowler and Henry Onyekuru, who is spending next season on loan with Anderlecht.
It looks as though work has not yet been completed by the Toffees though with Zirkzee and Gibson’s arrivals still said to be on the cards.
Football Insider Verdict
Everton will be making a monumental statement if they manage to beat Arsenal and one of the two big Manchester clubs to the signing of an overseas youngster. Normally wonderkids would opt for a move to the capital, but Arsenal have appeared to have lost out on Zirkzee in favour of Everton, whose manager is known for giving youth a chance. Koeman offered a host of youngsters a spot in his first-team plans last season and hopefully that will continue next season despite the arrivals of some elite names. Zirkzee would be making the correct decision by choosing the Blue half of Merseyside.
