Kenny: Everton fans will be 'gutted' as Premier League club line up Davies swoop

Everton supporters will be “gutted” if Tom Davies leaves the club this summer – he is “one of their own” after all.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively after Football Insider revealed last Saturday that Southampton are eyeing the 22-year-old.

The Saints attempted to sign Davies last year, though that deal never materialised.

The midfielder’s current Goodison contract expires in 2023 and the Toffees are yet to open talks with him over a new deal.

Only two teams in the Premier League handed fewer minutes to academy products than the Toffees in 2020-21, as per CIES Football Observatory.

Kenny predicted that Davies’ potential departure would “upset” Everton fans starved of seeing home-grown talent thrive on Merseyside.

“It could definitely upset the supporters,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s an excellent player, he’s come through the academy and they count him as one of their own.

“We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. Does he want to leave? Does he want to go somewhere where he can get more game time?

“There are so many factors to someone leaving a club and moving on. So I’m sure they’ll be gutted but there will be a reason behind if it does happen.”

Davies made his Everton debut in 2016 and has gone on to turn out 151 times for the club.

He featured 25 times in the 2020-21 Premier League campaign, though just 17 of those appearances were starts.
