Everton line up quick £20m January deal after blow - report

By Dominic Toner

Everton are keen to land Burnley defender Michael Keane in January, according to a report.

The Sun claim that the Toffees want to sign the £20million-rated centre-back in the January window after being priced out of a move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, rated at £50million.

The report details that Everton are keen to wrap up a quick deal for Keane and Burnley could sell, but would prefer he stayed until the end of the season to help the club’s fight against relegation.

Keane is a crucial player to the Burnley side and has played every single minute in the Premier League this season.

The 23-year-old has become a leader in Sean Dyche’s side and is a main reason why the club are currently six points above the relegation places.

He began his career at Manchester United’s academy and completed a move to Turf Moor in 2015 after a number of loan spells as a youngster.

Keane helped Burnley achieve promotion from the Championship last season and is now proving himself in the top-flight.

The centre-back also earned his first senior call-up to the England squad in October, but is still awaiting his first cap.

Football Insider verdict:

Everton should prioritise the signing of Keane in January as he is exactly what the club are in need of. The Toffees have recruited the solid Ashley Williams at the back, but he needs a young pacy defender to play alongside him. Ronald Koeman is currently switching between Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori, but Keane would be the perfect centre-back partner for Williams. He has emerged as one of England’s best young centre-backs and a move to Goodison Park would be a good next step in his career. He has already proved himself in the Premier League and would be a very smart piece of business by Everton.
