Sources: Nuno tells Everton he can lure Tottenham star Doherty - and this is when deal can be done
Nuno Espirito Santo has told Everton he can lure Matt Doherty from Tottenham if he lands the manager’s job, Football Insider understands.
The Portugese, 47 had been the frontrunner for the vacant Goodison post before being usurped by Rafael Benitez.
Nuno is reportedly still a contender as Benitez has yet to put paper to paper on a deal with Everton despite coming to an agreement in talks on Thursday night.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Nuno would be keen to re-sign Doherty straight away and slot him into his favoured defensive set-up at Everton.
The Portugese preferred a three-man defence flanked by wing-backs during his Wolves reign and that system suited the Republic of Ireland international.
He joined Spurs last summer in a £16million deal but struggled to live up to expectations.
Doherty played the best football of his career under Nuno and was Wolves’ third top scorer with seven goals in 2019-20 as well as supplying five assists.
He has not reached those heights at Spurs, with his 29 matches yielding four assists and no goals so far.
Everton are in the market for a new right-back this summer to provide cover and competition for veteran skipper Seamus Coleman.
Everton would have a major transfer kitty to work with in the summer window but need to sell before they ca buy due to financial fair play restrictions.
Owner Farhad Moshiri has backed a succession of managers to the hilt since taking over the club but has failed to lift the club into the Champions League elite.
