Whelan issues Everton fan verdict as pictures emerge from Goodison amid Benitez update
Noel Whelan has urged Everton fans to “take the blinkers off” over the prospective appointment of Rafael Benitez.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 61-year-old’s links to Liverpool are the “only stumbling block” for the Toffees.
As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (June 18th), Benitez has reached an agreement to take charge of the Toffees after being offered the post.
However, as reported by the Mirror, Everton fans protested the Spaniard’s prospective arrival with expletive-laden banners at Goodison Park.
One of the banners photographed said: “Benitez not welcome”.
However, Whelan urged supporters to see Benitez for the “quality” manager he is.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The only stumbling block is can you turn a blind eye to the red? Sometimes you see a player or a manager wearing a certain shirt. That shouldn’t be the case.
“You’ve got to take those blinkers off. At the end of the day, everyone changes clubs every now and again. No one ever stays at a club for the rest of their lives.
“You’ve got to look what he did at Liverpool. I would, as an Everton fan, be wanting him to do the same, if not better, on the blue side of Liverpool.
“Give the man an opportunity. It’s no different to Liverpool fans looking at him going: ‘Well, how can you do that?’
“You take away the fact that he has managed Liverpool, I think the fans would be more than happy with that appointment.
“It should always be about the quality, what he can bring in and what he can do with the players in front of him.“
Benitez spent six years in charge of Liverpool between 2004 and 2010.
He has been out of work since leaving Dalian Professional in January.
