Everton player ratings v Swansea: Senior duo are 3/10 shockers

By Matt Bullin

Football Insider rates Everton’s players in their 1-0 defeat to Swansea at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Martin Stekelenburg 6 – Did not have much to do but made one superb save to deny Leroy Fer in the second half.

Mason Holgate 6 – Made a magnificent block to deny Mawson at point-blank range and he looked solid at right-back. But his delivery from out wide was woeful and going forward his performance leaves a lot to be desired.

Phil Jagielka 3 – Manhandled by Fernando Llorente’s goal – his teammates and manager would expect him to be stronger as a senior player. He made a poor headed clearance to allow Jordan Ayew’s strike which hit the post.

Ashley Williams 5 – Not quite as bad as Jagielka but he did little to help his skipper either.

Leighton Baines 6 – Had a quiet game, looked accomplished in defence and reasonable going forward. He delivered several dangerous set-pieces, but ultimately he did not do enough to swing the game.

Idrissa Gueye 6 – Did Everton’s dirty work and provided an effective screen for the back-four, but even he did not have his best game.

Tom Davies 6 – Had a quiet first 45 but grew into the game and looked good in the second half. He bossed the midfield for the Toffees and consolidated possession well, but he did not do enough going forward.

Gareth Barry 3 – The 36-year-old senior man is past his best but he looked seriously out of his depth in the first half and Leon Britton played him off the park. He should have done better to stop Ayew’s cross for Llorente’s goal, and was sacrificed for Enner Valencia mid-way through the second period.

Kevin Mirallas 5 – He tried hard and had plenty of energy but very little quality. His runs often ended up with him running away from support and he snatched at the few chances he did have.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – For a man that is rated at £50million plus he looked poor. He was short of suppliers sure, but he did not do enough to get into the game. His first impact finally came 10 minutes from the end and although he did well his effort was dragged wide.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 4 – Completely ineffective and was hauled off at half-time. Not helped by his more senior team-mates in any way.

Ross Barkley 7 (on for Calvert-Lewin 45′) – Did well after he came on, put several dangerous balls in the box. Probably should have started.

Enner Valencia 6 (on for Barry 64′) – Did not have many chances but when he did he did not create anything.

Jonjoe Kenny 6 (on for Holgate 78′)6 –  His delivery was far better than Holgate’s, but he was not tested defensively.

In other Everton news, fans reactions were divided as this 23-year-old was benched for the match against Swansea.
