Everton shown clear path to sign Nathan Ake this summer amid latest Man City future update

Everton are expected to be involved in the race to sign Manchester City defender Nathan Ake if he leaves this summer.

The defender’s minutes have been reduced this season amid the competition at the Etihad Stadium, with Marc Guehi’s January arrival only further decreasing the importance of his role in the squad.

Ake moved to Man City from Bournemouth in 2020 and has won the Premier League four times since, making 174 appearances for the club.

Recent years have seen an increase in injury issues for the 31-year-old, but he remains a quality defender likely to go to the World Cup with the Netherlands this summer.

Everton transfer chiefs will have been put on alert by the news that Ake, despite having a year remaining on his contract, looks set to leave Man City this summer.

Everton offered chance to sign Nathan Ake

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Ake was likely to leave Man City this summer following the arrival of Guehi.

Signed from Crystal Palace in January, the 25-year-old has played the full 90 minutes of every single one of the Citizens’ Premier League games since.

Ake’s appearances have been limited to mere minutes off the bench, with the defender spending a total of four Premier League minutes on the pitch since mid-January.

The Athletic reported on Monday that Ake is expected to move on this summer, and Everton could well be among the main contenders.

The Toffees reportedly worked on a deal last summer, but a bid never materialised. This summer, the arrival of a central defender appears more important than ever.

Jarrad Branthwaite was stretchered off as Everton lost the Merseyside derby to Liverpool, and he is set for another long-term period of absence with a hamstring injury.

The trio of James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and Jake O’Brien have done well to cover for the 23-year-old this season, but a fourth option must be sought this summer.

Ake would be expected to be allowed to leave Man City for a reasonable price, considering his years of service at the Etihad Stadium.

What Ake has said about his Manchester City future

Ake started and played the full 90 minutes as Man City beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final last month, and the defender did similarly on Saturday as they beat Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final.

The 31-year-old still has much to offer, and his treatment at the hands of Guardiola has been hard to explain at times.

“I have no idea, but winning the Carabao would certainly be a nice ending,” Ake said when asked about his future last month.

David Moyes and Everton will be waiting if the defender does leave for a new project this summer.
