Everton are expected to hold a transfer meeting this week to discuss a possible January swoop to sign Lille centre-back Adama Soumaoro, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed in their live transfer blog on Monday [03:59PM] that the Toffees are keeping close tabs on Saomaoro, 25, who is valued at over £20million by Ligue 1 side Lille.
It is understood that the French club are strapped for cash at the minute and any sale of Soumaoro will help alleviate some of their financial woes.
The defensive enforcer has spent his entire career with Lille and has only recently returned from a serious Achilles tendon injury in November.
He has since played every minute in Ligue 1, but at the age of 25, Soumaoro has only ever made 77 senior appearances throughout his entire career.
Football Insider verdict
Everton definitely need a new striker in the January window but could also do with bolstering a defence that has been woefully underperforming this season. Sam Allardyce is the man who can be trusted to sort out the backline but he should definitely avoid splashing over £20million on Soumaoro. The French centre-back simply hasn’t got going in his career and although he may well be a mainstay for Lille, for someone aged 25 to have played as little as he has is a huge risk with that price tag. There has to be better options out there for Allardyce and Steve Walsh to pick up without spending a stupid amount of money.
