Everton to swoop for Kalvin Phillips after new 'whispers' - Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed the club will now try and sign Kalvin Phillips as midfielder Amadou Onana closes in on a move to Aston Villa. 

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted Phillips would add plenty of experience to the Merseysiders’ midfield.

Football Insider revealed on 15 July Onana has agreed personal terms with Villa as he prepares to make his £50million move to the club. 

The 22-year-old has been linked with several top clubs in recent months, but it appears as though the West Midlands giants are now set to secure his signature. 

Football Insider revealed on 17 July Everton have registered their interest in signing Phillips from Manchester City as Onana's potential replacement this summer.

The Premier League champions are keen to offload the 28-year-old after he endured a difficult loan spell at West Ham last season.

Wyness believes Phillips could add the necessary steel to Sean Dyche’s side that was perhaps missing in the latest campaign. 

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The whisper is they will move for Kalvin Phillips, who Everton have been linked with for a while before. 

“That would bring great experience into the midfield. 

“He’s not quite the Onana-type player, but he’s similar and would certainly give a lot of experience and steel in the midfield. 

“That’s something we were perhaps missing a little bit last year. 

“I think Sean will go for experience, someone like Phillips and that’s something we’ll have to keep an eye on.”
