David Moyes could solve Everton selection dilemma by playing star 'in new role' vs Hull

David Moyes is facing a selection dilemma over his left-back for Everton's trip to Hull City after Vitalii Mykolenko picked up an injury while on international duty.

That is according to former senior Everton scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The 27-year-old could still feature but is facing a race against time to be fit from the start to face the newly-promoted club.

Everton are looking to build on an unbeaten start to the season, which has seen them win four of their seven matches across all competitions.

But the Toffees have been left perilously light in various positions following a disappointing summer transfer window, and will always be just a few injuries away from crisis.

Christian Norgaard is also close to making a return following his summer move from Arsenal, with the Dane set to help reinforce the defence when he can feature.

Hull City will be 'difficult to beat'

Mykolenko faced a period out injured at the start of last season, too, with Moyes opting to play James Garner there.

The midfielder could cover the position again and has a natural replacement in Hayden Hackney, but it remains unclear whether the Scot will want to take him away from the middle.

"I'm trying to work out the starting line-up for Everton. They're at Hull, and I'm sure Everton get a result there," King told Football Insider.

"At this present moment in time, Hull are difficult to beat. They've had their injury problems as well. It'll be interesting, the back four. I've got [Jake] O'Brien, [James] Tarkowksi, [Jarrad] Braithwaite. Who's going to play left-back?

"Can they put [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles in there? And then you've got the midfield. Again, who's fit to play in there?

"And then, to be fair, if they're going to play three across the front, the boy from Chelsea [Tyrique George], the boy [Thierno] Barry and [Jack] Grealish, that's not a bad front three, really.

"It'll certainly be interesting to see what their starting XI's are going to be."

Can Ainsley Maitland-Niles play at left-back?

When Everton paid just £4million for Maitland-Niles at the end of the summer transfer window, they did so knowing the value of the player they were getting.

The 29-year-old has had his issues with injury, but his technical quality and intelligence makes him one of the most versatile players out there.

There are few positions Maitland-Niles has not covered on the pitch, and he certainly knows left-back well.

That could allow the return of O'Brien on the right, and maintain Garner's position in the middle.
