Everton avoid 'really bad news' despite fan fury - Stefan Borson
Everton missing out on European qualification in 2025-26 may have been a blessing in disguise at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Toffees would have struggled financially with European football next season.
With loanee Jack Grealish firing on all cylinders, it appeared that David Moyes's side had an incredible chance to finish much higher in the Premier League.
After failing to win any of their last seven matches of the season, though, the Toffees fell to 13th in the table, missing out on the Europa Conference League by four points.
Moyes' side will only have domestic competitions to worry about, and despite The Friedkins coming in as the club's new owners, financial concerns remain.
Everton have already welcomed back Tyrique George, with Hayden Hackney signing on a £25million deal, with supporters hopeful of another European charge.
Everton's late collapse a blessing in disguise
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained why no Europe was probably a positive on Merseyside, with the club now able to build without having to worry.
"I think SCR probably makes it slightly easier for them than the old PSR system, certainly, whilst they're not in Europe," he said.
"It would have been really bad news for them if they'd have got the Europa Conference League. It would be good for the fans, but it would have been financially very challenging for them.
"It would have put them on a 70 per cent cap in the Premier League and also having to comply with UEFA, so they wouldn't have made any money on it.
"Although the fans won't appreciate that, I think they're better off building from this base over time rather than going into the Europa Conference.
"As much as [Crystal] Palace and West Ham fans have enjoyed it, I just don't think it would have been good for them for this season."
No Europe could heavily impact transfers this summer
Although Borson has explained the positives of missing out on European football, there are bound to be some very frustrated fans still.
James Garner is already heavily linked with an exit, despite only signing a new contract in January, and his future is a major concern this summer.
Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested, though Eddie Howe's side also missing out on Europe.
Iliman Ndiaye is in the same boat. Multiple clubs are keeping tabs on the Senegalese, and no European football could push him towards the exit door.
