Everton to 'get message across' to Andy Burnham as 'big issue' emerges - Stefan Borson

Everton could seek help from the soon-to-be Prime Minister Andy Burnham amid new concerns over the club's kit.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Labour leader could play a key role in the ongoing war on gambling sponsorships in football.

The Toffees have recently announced a valuable partnership with CMC Markets as their new front-of-shirt sponsor, moving Stake to a sleeve sponsor ahead of next season.

A new multi-year deal being agreed with Stake, but attempts to totally ban gambling sponsors from the sport have raised new concerns on Merseyside.

It is understood that the Toffees face an early termination of their deal with the sleeve sponsor, but only if the UK government step up their plans.

With Burnham now set to take a seat at No.10 Downing Street, Everton may be able to find a way around the new concerns, at least Borson believes so.

Everton not the only ones facing 'big issue'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson mentioned Burnham's involvement during the club's PSR drama, insisting the same could happen again.

"Well, I think it's a bigger problem than just Everton, but Everton are fortunate that they've now got a a big Everton fan as Prime Minister," he said.

"As surprising as it may be, they may well have the ability to get a message across better now than ever before. Burnham was certainly out and about in terms of the Everton PSR cases.

"He was clearly being briefed by the club. It's a big issue for football if they draw a line under all betting sponsors on sleeves and training kits.

"And even more, if they were to ban them from sponsoring the leagues or advertising hoardings, these are big numbers that can't be replaced.

"If you shoo all gambling advertising from football, it's going to lose a lot of money that's not replaceable by the market.

"There just isn't the there isn't the the latent demand there to fill that that supply. So it will drive prices down, and clubs will be hit very, very hard by it."

Premier League backed to 'lobby' gambling bans

Borson is clearly not concerned about any incoming blanket bans, backing the Premier League to block the idea of gambling sponsors not being allowed in football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said: "I suspect that the Premier League will successfully lobby to continue in some form with gambling.

"Certainly for the foreseeable future, I just don't I think it it would be very, very difficult for them to deal with a complete ban."

Clubs all across the Premier League continue to do deals with gambling companies, not just Everton with Stake as the sleeve sponsor.
