Everton will regret West Ham transfer blunder as in-depth data emerges

Everton may well be looking back and wondering why they did not push harder for West Ham United striker Taty Castellanos this summer.

The 27-year-old starred as the Hammers smashed Wrexham 6-0 on Friday, scoring and assisting to send his side top of the table.

The striker only arrived at the London Stadium in January, joining from Lazio for around £25million, and likely would have cost a similar fee to sign following West Ham's relegation.

Everton reportedly had Castellanos on their list but ultimately never made a move, leaving their pursuit of a striker until the final day and allowing it to blow up in their face.

Following Beto's deadline-day move to Fiorentina, the Toffees went after Folarin Balogun and agreed a fee for the striker.

However, there were issues discovered in the medical and disagreements behind the scenes, eventually resulting in the player himself pulling out of the move at the last minute and leaving Everton with just one recognised senior striker.

When he first came in, the signing of Castellanos looked to have been a desperate move from West Ham that would ultimately backfire.

The Argentine failed to score in his opening four Premier League games, and looked to struggle with the adaptation.

But towards the end of the season, the 27-year-old began to find form and looked really quite dangerous whenever he was on the pitch.

Castellanos has taken to the Championship easily, but Everton should have kept him in the Premier League.

The striker was unselfish to set up Joel Piroe against Wrexham, before later getting his goal with a lovely finish into the bottom corner.

He ultimately created three chances, took a staggering six shots, completed a successful dribble and drew a foul.

And Castellanos got his defensive work done, too, completing a block, two clearances, winning two duels and making five recoveries.

Everton's failure to get the deal for Folarin Balogun over the line has left David Moyes with only Thierno Barry to choose from up front until January.

Should the Frenchman get injured, the Scot will be forced to look to internal solutions, or as a last resort, the free agent market.

"I am disappointed that we didn't do more business and things didn't go our way in the end," he said after the window had shut.

"Sometimes in football you have to live with disappointments and move on, and we will."
