Angus Kinnear wants Everton to appoint 'ambitious' manager alongside new sporting director in 'cleaner' set-up

Everton are likely to target a younger manager with more of a modern-day coaching background if David Moyes chooses to walk away from the club.

That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that his former club would also look to add a sporting director to their club hierarchy.

This comes amid suggestions that Moyes could contemplate stepping away from his role after a hugely frustrating end to the summer transfer window.

The Scottish boss is also out of contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium next summer, and Wyness is adamant that The Friedkin Group must do more in their efforts to back him in the coming months.

Everton are currently unbeaten across the opening three games of the new Premier League campaign, and face Tottenham in their next outing on Saturday.

However, there is a feeling that their promising start may be papering over the cracks a little, with Thierno Barry now their only recognised senior striker.

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the club's current CEO Angus Kinnear will be crucial to how they approach a change in the dugout if it is needed.

Wyness believes that Kinnear would favour a younger appointment if Moyes stepped away, although he acknowledged that the plan could change if he also resigned.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he explained the route that Everton would likely go down if Moyes pulled the plug.

"This comes back to whether Angus Kinnear is going to be there, and also whether the whole recruitment scenario would change because it seems to have been too messy with too many layers of decision-making involved," Wyness said.

"If Angus was there, then I think you'd expect to see a more modern type of manager coming in with a sporting director and a cleaner, clearer structure put in place.

"Now if the Friedkins are going to come out and say that they're going to be selling, then I think you're going to be looking more for a caretaker type manager. So I think a lot depends on the way this goes behind the scenes as to the type of replacement it would be. 

"If Everton really are trying to move forward, they should be looking to try and put in somebody ambitious, but first of all, they should be backing David and getting things right. But if he were to go, then they should be looking for something ambitious."

Wyness previously told Football Insider earlier this week that he does not see Moyes walking away from Everton until the January transfer window at the earliest.

The former boardroom man shared a personal relationship with the Toffees boss during his time at Goodison Park, and does not believe he is the kind of man who would "play games" and resign quickly.

However, Wyness also acknowledged that if Moyes was not backed in the transfer market once again in January, then he would be well within his rights to seriously consider his future.

Wyness also remains hopeful that the discontent can be put on the backburner to some extent, if the team continue their positive start.
