David Moyes could sensationally quit as Everton manager

David Moyes could sensationally quit his job as Everton manager amid a deteriorating relationship with the club's hierarchy, sources have told Football Insider.

The 63-year-old has gone public with his lack of contact with The Friedkin Group, who had criticised him for not qualifying for European football last season.

Supporters have turned on the owners after the club's calamitous end to the summer transfer window, which left them with just one right-back and only one senior striker following a string of collapsed deals.

On top of their poor transfer strategy, sources say Everton have failed to adequately support Moyes and are yet to offer him a new contract.

Currently, the Scotsman’s deal expires in 2027, and there is no immediate prospect of an extension.

As a result, Moyes could walk out on the Toffees, less than two years after he made what has turned out to be a successful return to the club.

Has David Moyes been a success at Everton since his return?

Despite failing to impress the more demanding section of the Merseyside club's fanbase, Moyes has had a solid return in his second spell.

Overall, the manager has a 37.5 per cent win rate and was only four points off European qualification last season.

So far in the 2026-27 campaign, Everton are unbeaten and sit eighth in the Premier League, having also progressed into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

However, Moyes has not been backed in the transfer windows, with the club having just 18 senior players as it stands.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if the manager feels that the current task is too much for him and decides to walk away from his current position.

Are Everton at risk of being dragged into a relegation battle?

Ahead of Saturday’s fixtures in the Premier League, Opta on 5 September believes that there is little chance of Everton fighting for survival this season. 

As it stands, the Toffees have an 8.69 per cent chance of going down, and are predicted to finish in ninth place.

Therefore, despite all their issues, Moyes should have the club fighting for European qualification once again.

However, if the manager were to quit, this prediction would likely change dramatically, especially if a less experienced coach were to walk through the door.

Nevertheless, if Moyes decides to stick around, Everton could be set for a memorable campaign under his leadership.
