David Moyes is 'transforming' Everton's playing style as surprise data emerges

Published on:

Everton's newfound high-pressing style could do wonders for David Moyes' CV in the coming years.

That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Scottish boss is proving he has another string to his bow at the moment.

Everton currently lead the entire Premier League for pressures in the attacking half so far this season, which is a far cry from Moyes' more pragmatic reputation as a boss.

However, Wyness believes that the change of mindset will be more a case of the boss applying the style that is best for his squad, rather than any specific desire for him to change.

He also pointed out that it will stand Moyes in good stead whenever he leaves Everton, as he is showing a new side to himself as a tactician.

His team remain unbeaten in the Premier League after their opening five games, and they resume their campaign away at Hull City on Saturday.

Everton squad could drive another change

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Moyes may be forced to revert away from the new high-octane style as the season progresses.

The Merseysiders have one of the division's smallest squads at the moment, after a disastrous end to the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained how that could force Moyes to adapt again as the campaign wears on.

"I think it's the squad he's got. He's realised that they've got to press hard. It's not the Moyes style. I think that it's just the way that things have worked out that dictates that's the style he's going to have to play," he said.

"Now, in a funny way, it helps Moyes because it shows that he has that ability to press high and do that. And so, should he move on at some stage for Everton, it'll look good on his CV that he's able to adapt that style.

"There's certainly been no problem with effort and energy from the squad. The trouble is, with such a small squad, can you sustain that over a long period of the season?

"That's the biggest issue they've got, and that's the big warning sign right now, and the Everton fans are aware of it."

Everton Insider: David Moyes ready to 'talk to other clubs' amid contract latest

David Moyes ready to 'talk to other clubs'

Wyness previously told Football Insider at the end of September that Moyes will be ready to "talk to other clubs" if Everton haven't offered him a new contract by January.

The 63-year-old's current deal is up at the end of the campaign, but he is yet to be offered an extension by the club hierarchy.

Wyness believes that his countryman has no desire to depart the Hill Dickinson Stadium any time soon, but will feel forced into exploring his options if a new deal isn't put on the table in the coming months.

Wyness is adamant that Moyes will want security at this stage of his managerial career, and Everton are running out of time to provide that for him.
