Everton fans have called for David Moyes to be sacked after his controversial comments regarding cup competitions this season.

The Toffees are set to embark on their Carabao Cup campaign on Wednesday when they travel to Deepdale to take on Preston North End.

The match is yet another opportunity for the Merseyside club to go on a cup run as they aim to end their ever-growing trophy drought.

Everton failed to impress in either of the domestic cup competitions last season, as they were knocked out in the third round of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

As a result, a reporter asked Moyes before the Preston game about the importance of the competitions, to which he questioned whether winning a cup is more important than staying in the Premier League.

These comments have not gone down with many Toffees fans, with some now calling for the manager to be dismissed.

The Toffees have not had a lot to shout about in recent years.

The club has not won a cup since 1995, and their stay in the Premier League has deprived Everton of any promotions to celebrate.

As a result, winning either the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup is seen as a top priority for many fans, especially after the club established itself as a mid-table outfit last season.

However, when asked about how important the cups were, Moyes’ response proved to be controversial.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “Of course we all want to win the cups. “Yes, the cups are hugely important, would it be more important than staying in the Premier League?

“I’ll ask you the question: Is winning a cup more important than staying in the Premier League? What would your answer be? Of course we want to do well in the cups, I can’t think of any manager who wouldn’t want a good run in the cups.”

As a result, supporters are furious and were quick to take to X to blast the manager for this viewpoint.

What is Everton’s recent history in the Carabao Cup?

In recent years, Everton have been awful in the Carabao Cup.

The club has been knocked out in the third round in four of their last five seasons, which included embarrassing defeats to the likes of QPR, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In fact, the last time Everton even made it to the semi-finals was in the 2015-16 campaign, when they were knocked out by Man City.

However, it remains to be seen if the Toffees are able to go all the way this season, or if it will prove to be another forgettable campaign in the cups.
