Keith Wyness shares update on David Moyes' Everton future and chances of him being sacked
Everton are hoping to offer manager David Moyes an extension to his current contract within the next few months.
That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that his former club will look to get a new deal in place "fairly soon" if things go to plan
This comes amid strong links between Moyes and the vacant Scotland job, after Steve Clarke's decision to step down from his post after they were knocked out of the World Cup.
Moyes is into the final year of his deal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Wyness is adamant that his future will hinge on how the team start the 2026-27 campaign.
Everton showed plenty of promise last term, but a seven-game winless run to close out their campaign saw them fall away from the European race and finish 13th.
Wyness believes that the club hierarchy will be expecting significant progress this time around, and feels that Moyes will need at least a top-half finish to keep his job.
Keith Wyness: Everton will only eye managerial change on one condition
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Friedkin Group will only plot a change in the dugout if things start badly for the team in 2026-27.
He expects both Moyes and the club to evaluate each other as the campaign progresses, but feels that the 63-year-old will have his contract extended if the team are on course to consolidate themselves in the top 10.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness emphasised that now is the time for his former club to truly kick on.
"I think a lot's going to depend on this next season. The Friedkins are grateful to Moyes for stabilising the club. They had a disappointing end of the season last year, but regardless of that, there are some really green shoots coming through," he said.
"They'd expect to see further improvement, and I think Moyes would as well in terms of consolidating the club in the top half of the table. And I think if that was the case, then there'd be another renewal.
"If things were to fall apart, then of course I think that next season you might see a change. But I don't expect that.
"It's going to be a case of this season, both having a look at each other. I think it works from Moyes' point of view as well, that he has to look at the Friedkins as owners. We've not really seen major action from them yet.
"He needs to also see if they can kick on and how the whole personality fit works. And decisions will be made fairly soon if things are starting to go in the right direction."
David Moyes in 'no doubt' that he wants Scotland job
Wyness told Football Insider earlier this week that there is "no doubt" that Moyes is interested in managing Scotland at some stage of his career.
The Scottish businessman worked with the boss for several years during his time at Goodison Park, and came to share a close relationship with him.
Wyness believes that despite Moyes' interest in the Scotland job, he won't take the reins right now, as he doesn't see it as the right time for his career.
However, he emphasised that he expects Moyes to take charge of his Scotland at some point before he opts to step away from the game.
