Scotland eyeing five-year David Moyes plan amid latest on Everton future - expert

Scotland may move to make Everton boss David Moyes their manager after the next "four or five-year cycle."

That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the SFA may look to appoint a stopgap manager until the 63-year-old becomes available.

Moyes is now into the final year of his contract at Everton, but is lining up a push to secure European football after significant progress last term.

Wyness believes that Scotland will need somebody to take them at least through to the next Euros before Moyes truly becomes available for them.

The veteran boss has emerged as an early favourite for the Scotland job after Steve Clarke's exit, while the likes of Neil McCann and Steven Naismith have also been heavily linked.

Scotland crashed out of this summer's World Cup at the group stage, but will be targeting major improvement at Euro 2028 in the UK.

Keith Wyness: David Moyes could take Scotland job after 2030 World Cup

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the SFA may be able to turn to Moyes as their coach after the next World Cup in 2030.

The Scottish businessman worked alongside the Everton boss for many years, and believes that he remains committed to the Toffees at the moment.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness stressed that Scotland will have to be patient if they want to get Moyes.

"I had to think about this one quite a lot because obviously I'm a very proud Scotsman, very proud of the Tartan Army rather than the actual team itself this time," he said.

"I would think that possibly after the next four or five-year cycle, that's when you might see David Moyes coming in at that time.

"So whoever fills in there would take them through the Euros, possibly up to the next World Cup. Then you might see Moyes coming in either before that World Cup or after, depending on how the whole Everton thing goes."

Everton set sack boundary for Moyes

Wyness told Football Insider last week that Everton are hoping to offer Moyes and extension on his contract within the next few months.

The Merseysiders are heading towards a crucial decision for their boss as the end of his contract approaches, but they are keen to hand him renewed terms if the team start the new campaign well.

The Friedkin Group are "grateful" to Moyes for stablising the club, but may consider letting him go if they do not look likely to consolidate themselves in the top 10 next term.

Moyes had Everton in European contention until the final weeks of last season, and the hope is that they can push for that goal once again.
