Odds slashed: Everton boss David Moyes is new favourite to be next Scotland manager
David Moyes is leading the current market to be the next Scotland manager as uncertainty looms around his Everton future.
Steve Clarke left his position in charge of the Scottish national team after they were knocked out of the World Cup last month.
They failed to progress out of the group stage following defeats to Morocco and Brazil, despite beating Haiti 1-0.
Several candidates have been touted to be approached by the SFA in the coming months, with a little over two months until they play again in the Nations League B.
Moyes' name has been widely mentioned in relation to the vacancy, considering he is one of the most high-profile Scottish managers in the sport.
It remains unclear if he would be willing to leave his position at Everton, however, as they chase a long-awaited return to European football next season.
David Moyes is the bookies' favourite to be the next Scotland manager
Moyes' Toffees side finished 13th in the Premier League last season, four points from Europe.
They had started the season brightly and looked prime for qualification, but tailed off with no wins in their final seven matches of the campaign.
Some Everton supporters have questioned his position in charge, but all current signs point to him remaining at the helm for the new season.
That is if he does not leave to pursue another opportunity, with several of the top UK bookmakers installing him as the current favourite to be the next Scotland manager.
He is as short as 2/1 with some sites, while former Everton manager Roberto Martinez is second-favourite at 5/2.
What has Moyes said about becoming the Scotland manager?
After previously working closely with him at Everton, former club executive Keith Wyness has revealed to Football Insider that Moyes harbours ambitions of being the Scotland boss before his managerial career is over.
He may well see this opportunity as one of the last chances to do so at 63-years-old, especially after Clarke held the role for seven years.
Speaking back in 2017 after being sacked by Sunderland, Moyes admitted that he was open to the job, saying: "I don’t think anyone ever turns down their national team, but it’s got to be at the right time as well. My first choice would be to go back to club management but, if Scotland want to talk, I’d be happy to speak to them to see what they have to say.”
Then in 2021, he reiterated his desire to do so by saying: "I’m getting now to a stage in my career where I really enjoy club management and feel I have unfinished business to do yet. But I think at the right time, when things are right for me and if it’s right for Scotland, then it might be a consideration.”
