Stefan Borson: Everton have a 'big concern' over owners than Man City and Chelsea have avoided

Roma are likely to be a more dominant club than Everton in The Friedkin Group's ownership model in the future.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that multi-club ownership could become a problem for the Toffees.

The likes of the City Group and BlueCo have shown how successful multi-club ownership can be, but both have one dominant club and other feeder clubs.

And with Roma now playing Champions League football, it can certainly be argued that the Italian giants are the more dominant out of the two.

Should both clubs play in the same European competition in 2027-28, there are serious concerns over the repercussions from a UEFA point of view.

That is potentially why TFG could look to do more than simply search for new investors at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and pour their focus into Roma instead.

Everton and Roma to clash for TFG

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained his concerns over the Toffees' current role in TFG's multi-club ownership model.

"When we spoke about this right back when they bought the business, one of the big concerns was that you've got an unusual multi-club organisation," he said.

"It was the only one that had effectively two senior institutions of a similar size, Everton and Roma. And Roma qualified for the Champions League this season.

"That obviously makes them the senior partner. But it's a problem anyway, where you've got two clubs that are of similar scale.

"No other MCO has had that problem. There's been very clearly, if you look at say, Chelsea or Manchester City, a very clearly dominant team in that group.

"And that's not the case with Everton and Roma. I think that might be a problem going forward more generally."

What are Everton's chances of Champions League qualification?

Everton are sitting eighth in the Premier League table after three matches, beating Crystal Palace and drawing with Bournemouth and Manchester United.

David Moyes' side will have a true test against Tottenham Hotspur next, and that will surely show exactly where the Toffees stand in 2026-27.

According to Opta, Everton currently have a 13.62 per cent chance of qualifying for the Champions League, while Europa League is a 6.6 per cent chance.

Over in Italy, Roma are currently top of the Serie A table, winning three from three, and showing good signs of securing Champions League football.
